Pre-Thanksgiving Publix Run... I mean run!

This week I was a little behind on preparing our grocery list and I didn't get into the store until closing hour. Nonetheless, I made half the list before hand and entered Publix with sixty minutes and counting with my dear hubby. Together, we managed to get almost everything I planned to get, with a few extras.

I used two $5/$25 Wags Q's on the total, which brought down the final cost quite a bit. I also tend to find useful peelies, tearpads and hangtags while I'm in a store shopping, but many stores carry these types of coupons so don't dispare! Additionally, we will be sending off for a $10 Nabisco Keep the Jingle in Your Holiday rebate, which I will deduct from my amount spent once it comes in. Keep these in mind as you gaze upon this week's run.

Learn more about the Nabisco rebate here. Hurry, expires November 30th!.

Couponing for Beginners: The Lingo

By popular demand, I have compiled a comprehensive list of acronyms most commonly used in the "coupon community." For all you out there who don't know an RR from an ECB, or OOP from WYB, this one's for you! If you get stumped by an acronym on (or not on) this list, leave a comment below, and I will clue you in as best I can. I will continue to update this list as new terms become more frequently used or relevant.

$/#- Refers to the value of a coupon. For example, $1/2 means the coupon will take off $1 if you buy two eligible products. On a B1G1 deal at Publix, you can use two $/1 Qs (one per item, even though you don't technically buy the free item), OR one $/2 Q.

$/$$-
Refers to a type of coupon which takes a certain amount off of your entire bill once it reaches a certain subtotal. Whether the necessary minimum amount ($$) is calculated before or after coupons is up to the discretion of the individual store or coupon. (Ex: $5/20 Wags Q = $5 off my order once my bill reaches $20)

B1G1/BOGO-
Buy one, get one free

Blinkie-
Type of coupon that is distributed one at a time out of an electronic dispenser, located near relevant products in-store. These Qs usually have a longer exp. date than those from the Sunday paper or a peelie. The electronic dispensers usually blink, thus the name--blinkies.

ECB-
Extra Care Bucks: CVS in-store coupons printed out WYB certain products listed in their ad. These in-store dollars usually have an expiration date of one month from the date printed and can be used on anything except alcohol, tobacco, prescription, and any other purchases prohibited in the fine print.

Exp-
Expires/Expiration (date)

FQ/FP- Food Lion Coupon/ Food Lion Printable

GC-
Gift Card

IP- Internet Printable (coupon)

MIR-
Mail in Rebate

MQ- Manufacturer Coupon: Type of coupon for which store are reimbursed the face value, plus 8 cents.

OOP- Out of pocket: this refers to the actual amount of cash needed to make the purchase. This amount is not affected by any coupons or GC that may have been issued after the actual amount paid out of pocket.

Peelie- Type of coupon found on a product in-store. You have to peel it off to use it immediately.

Q- Coupon

RR- Register Reward: Walgreens in-store coupon printed out WYB certain products listed in their ad. These in-store dollars usually have an expiration date ranging from 1 to 2 weeks from the date printed and can be used on anything except alcohol, tobacco, prescription, and any other purchase prohibited in the fine print.

TQ/TP-
Target Coupon/ Target Printable (coupon)

Tear Pad-
Type of coupon peeled off a pad of identical coupons. These are most often located in-store, on a cardboard display that showcases relevant products and have an exp. date farther out than those from the Sunday paper.

WYB- When you buy

Wags-
Walgreens

A Few Thoughts about Rebates

This week some rebates came in the mail-- $6.99 for buying Organix shampoo and $12.00 for something else I can't remember. That added $18.99 to our budget, a much needed boost to our dwindling pot of money.

Balance of budget $122.26

Spent up to date:
$77.74

Savings up to date:$780.16

Here are just a few thoughts I have about rebates and deciding which ones are "right" for you...

  • If you don't already know, rebates are actually cash back (in the form of a check) that a company gives you just for buying a product. Sometimes companies will reimburse you for the WHOLE COST... which makes the product FREE. You can use coupons, gift cards and other other forms of discount or coupon to purchase the item in question, but it is up to the discretion of the company how much to reimburse you. I've had rebates come back in the amount of the cost of the product minus the coupons I used, I've had some come back in the amount of the entire cost of the product even though I used coupons to buy it at a cheaper price.
  • If this is not ringing any bells in your head yet, then let me emphasize that in the latter case, you would be getting the product free and making money off of buying it in the first place. These are the jewels of rebates, but are also few and far between. To see if your rebate is a "jewel" just check the fine print to see if your rebate excludes reimbursement of coupons. This is the case for the Organix shampoo I bought a while back. I used in-store coupons to purchase it, but still got the entire amount back, in cash.
  • Even though you usually won't see the money for 6-8 weeks, if you have the budget to invest the initial money to buy the product and it is a product or similar product you would already buy (like a different brand of shampoo than the one you normally buy), then in my opinion it is well worth the wait and the few minutes it takes to fill out the little form and address an envelop.
  • While rebates might seem like too much hassle or a waste of time, the fact is that we all have a few minutes every other day to do a certain relaxing activity. Some of us read, some take a long hot bath, some watch TV. Why not take a few of those minutes to fill out some rebate forms or check out a blog or two on grocery deals for the week? Personally, I like to use those 5 minutes (usually I set aside the time for right after I make the purchase) to fill out rebate forms. This is not to say that I just sit around filling out rebate forms for fun and all the time. I just look around online when I have nothing to do and check tags in a store I'm already in to see if there are any rebates on products or similar products I already purchase.
  • Some rebates I would not recommend you try to get are those for less than $1 back, as an envelop, a stamp and the time it takes to fill out the form might not be worth it. Also, try to stay away from rebates of products you would not normally buy, unless you can get all your money back, or make money off of it. In that case, I'm sure you can find a friend, family member or charity that could use the item. This is usually what I do when I can get a product for free. I will get as many as I can, even if neither my husband nor I can use it, because for us this is a way of giving back to the community and creating a budget for donation.

Here is a list of just some of the products you can usually find a rebate for, either in store/on the product, or online/printable:
  • Shampoo
  • Office supplies
  • Tech gadgets (cell phones, printers, etc.)
  • Wine
  • Frozen pizzas
  • Product paring - ex., beer & snacks, popcorn & candy, cheese & crackers

Some seasonal rebates include batteries (holidays), produce, certain crackers/chips (summer time).

Want to try a rebate now? Organix is still offering "FREE after rebate." They are on clearance at most Walgreens right now, too! *Be sure to check expiration date*

Wednesday Weekend Catch-up Post #2

So, this week I wasn't going to do much grocery shopping--except for the Harris Teeter triples. But I just happened to look at the Publix deals over at Southernsavers.com and saw some deals I had to get. I also stopped by Walgreens to get some mascara (I ran out!!) and it turned out to be a great run, too... Here's what all I did and where...

:: Harris Teeter ::
HT was tripling coupons up to 75 cents last week!! I was actually excited until I heard from my cousin and saw for myself that their prices were way higher than those shown on Southernsavers.com, not to mention they don't even carry some items. Anyway, I still had a decent run and got to stock up on some PB (yummy!) and sugar for the holidays =)
8 40oz Skippy Peanut Butter $5.99 sale B1G1 used $.75/1 coupons (tripled -$18)

2 Carnation Evaporated Milk sale $1 each used $1/2 coupon

1 Pillsbury All-Purpose Flour sale $.99 (limit 1) =(

5 Domino Brown Sugar $1.09 used $.35 coupons (tripled -$5.25)

1 Zone Bar $1.29 used $.55/1 (tripled -$1.29)

Total OOP $7.65

After I hit up HT I went to my grandma's house and bartered for some chicken!! She was out of PB (and I had plenty) and she also needed some brown sugar, so we swapped. Protein is so expensive, my hubby and I usually do without meat and fall back on dairy or beans. But thanks to my grandma, we have three huge cans of white meat chicken!! Thanks Gma! =)

:: Walgreens ::
I just went in to Walgreens for some mascara and I ended up with a nice stockpile =) I hope it doesn't expire any time soon.
Oh! And the nice young lady at the cosmetics counter graciously showed me to the double packs! And there I was ready to just by the regular packs... silly me! I emailed Drano to tell them how nice their products are and how much money I save annually from not having to call a plumber. They were so nice, they sent me a Free Item Coupon up to $6.xx off any Drano product! Not to mention, Drano is always nice to have around. I just bought it at Wags so I could just the $3/10 coupon for overage on the make-up products.

1 bottle Drano $5.99 used free item coupon I received for sending an email complimenting their products

2 double packs Almay mascara $6.99 & $7.99 sale B1G1-50% off (-$3.50)
-used $4/1 wags coupon
(-$8 automatically)
-used $2.50 IP

1 free 3-card Hallmark sampler

used $3/10 Grand Opening Wags Q

OOP $1.45

:: Publix ::
Like I said, I wasn't even going to do a Publix run this week, because 1) I've been sick as a dog for the past few days, and 2) my budget is getting tight. But I did anyway. I was starting to think that Publix deals just couldn't get any better until I checked with my Publix's customer service rep and asked her which competitor coupons they accepted. When she told me ANY competitor I didn't believe her. But when she said Walgreens, CVS and Save-A-Lot all I could think about were $/$$ coupons! Anyway, I was thinking about all the pasta I bought a few weeks ago and needed some sauce to go with it (the rest are fillers, or items I got for free so I could use a $/$$ coupon) I did this all in one transaction.

6 Kellogg's Special K Cereal $3.99 sale B1G1 used 6 $1/1 IPs and 6 $1/1 Target coupons

6 Ragu Pasta Sauce $2.53 sale B1G1 used 3 $1/2 IPs

2 Muir Glen Organic Pasta Sauce $3.59 sale B1G1 used 2 $1/1 IP

1 Tylenol Rapid Release GelpCaps 50ct sale $3.99 used $1/1 MQ and $3/1 Publix coupon

Total before sales and coupons - $53.69

Total after sales, before coupons - $26.55

used $5/25 Walgreens competitor coupon on total

OOP $1.14

:: A Craving run ::
Not shown is a big red bag of Popcorn, Indiana Gourmet Kettlecorn I bought at Wags with some leftover RRs because I was hungry. Not proud of it, but it happens. Though, looking back I wish I had saved the RRs for a rolling deal, but oh well... such is life. And the popcorn is soooo good and on sale right now =)

1 10.5 oz Popcorn, Indiana Kettlecorn sale $2.99 used $2.50 RR

Okay, so my husband and I bought some items that are not shown in the photos below, namely four (4) RedBulls we got at a rock bottom price! There's also a really great rebate out for potatoes: $5 back wyb 3 5lb bags. The potatoes at Publix this week are ridiculously priced. I also had some leftover rainchecks for school supplies at CVS, so I used them since my husband was already going to spend the initial amount on a card for his dad's birthday.

Here's what I got:

:: Walgreens ::

8 Poligrip (sm) $2
used free item coupons, produced $16 RRs

6 Excel Detergents $1.99

Welcome!! - Publix & Walgreens Run

Welcome to my new blog. I've been a rooky couponer for about a year now, and I finally feel confident enough to share neat savings tips with whoever wants to stop by my page. This blog is a fun way to keep up with my family budget and really keep track of what all my family purchases. This blog will be based on my goal of spending $200 or less between September 30 and December 31, 2009. I started this goal on a Facebook note, but have now transferred to blogspot for formatting purposes. Boy am I glad I did... Let's get a running start shall we?

:: A not-so-quick Publix & Walgreens Run ::

I sure found a few items LOL... an hour later...
